Newport Corp.: The Irvine manufacturer of components, instruments and integrated systems posted first-quarter net income of $1.3 million, or 14 cents a share, 34% higher than the $942,000, or 11 cents a share, for the corresponding period in 1996. Sales increased 11% to $31.1 million from $28 million.
