Re “Council OKs $375,000 Payout for Chief,” April 23: Some things are perilously askew with a system that attempts to placate a properly to be terminated police chief with a platinum package to avoid the cost of defending a possible lawsuit, and probably the greater fear of losing that suit.

Perhaps our next chief’s contract should be limited to five years, nonrenewable, but not excluding him or her from joining the list of new applicants.

* Unbelievable! Incredible! Outrageous! I can’t seem to find the words to express my disgust with the preposterous decision to give Chief Willie Williams a chunk of my tax dollars. He was hired to do a job and got paid for it. A lot of people don’t get contracts renewed. What makes him special?

First he lied to us about Las Vegas comps, and now he has put a gun to our head with the threat of a lawsuit. No wonder his contract wasn’t renewed. I would hope that other cities considering him for employment would take note of this high-class stickup.
