Snow Delays Search for Missing Pilot

From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A blinding, wind-driven snowstorm forced rescuers to halt their search for the pilot of an A-10 warplane that was found on a Rocky Mountain peak more than two weeks after it disappeared. Air Force spokeswoman Lt. Col. Robin Chandler said the search for Capt. Craig Button, 32, had been abandoned only temporarily. “We are determining right now whether the two para-rescue teams can undertake another mission later” in the day. Blinding snow had abated by early afternoon, she said, but the mountaintops were still shrouded in clouds. The aircraft disappeared during a routine training mission April 2, and Air Force officials have been at a loss to explain why the pilot left a formation in which he was flying.
