GAME REPORT

FIRST QUARTER

* IN REVIEW: The Clippers opened the scoring with Darrick Martin making a three-point shot. The Jazz responded with Karl Malone scoring inside. That would set the offensive tone for the first quarter--the Clippers shooting from outside with Martin making three of three from three-point range and the Jazz countering with Malone scoring inside and forcing the Clippers to double-team him underneath. Martin’s third three-pointer of the quarter tied the score, 19-19. Martin, however, picked up his third foul moments later and was forced to sit. The Jazz went on a 12-5 run.

* LEADING CLIPPER SCORER: Martin, 11 points.

* LEADING JAZZ SCORER: Malone, 13 points.

SECOND QUARTER

* IN REVIEW: With Martin in foul trouble, the Jazz brought back point guard John Stockton who opened the quarter by hitting a three-point shot to start a 7-2 run and the Jazz took a 12-point lead. After the Clippers failed to score following a timeout, Stockton drove the lane and passed to Shandon Anderson, who scored on a backdoor play and the Jazz held their biggest lead, 40-26, in the first half. Clipper Coach Bill Fitch, however, did not panic and kept Martin on the bench for the rest of the half. Brent Barry, Martin’s replacement at point guard, guided the Clippers on a 10-4 run with Bo Outlaw capping the rally with a basket underneath. The Jazz started showing its frustration against the Clippers’ scrappy defense. The most heated moment came when the Clippers had the ball and Outlaw set a hard screen on Stockton. When the Jazz forced a turnover, Outlaw and Stockton got tangled up on the ground fighting to get the loose ball. Outlaw ended up on top of Stockton, who turned and threw a punch. Malone retaliated at the other end, throwing a right forearm to Outlaw’s face and the Jazz forward was called for a technical with nearly six minutes remaining. The Clippers made an emotional turnaround, outscoring the Jazz, 12-4, and tying the score at 48-48. The Jazz, however, finished off the quarter with a 6-0 run.

* LEADING JAZZ SCORER: Antoine Carr, 6 points.

THIRD QUARTER

* IN REVIEW: From the end of the half to the beginning of the third, the Jazz outscored the Clippers, 10-0, during a 2-minute 45-second span. Stockton controlled the tempo of the game. He made a three-point shot and had 12 points as the Jazz held a 63-52 advantage. Loy Vaught proved the Clippers with two baskets, but the Jazz maintained control. Utah had outscored the Clippers, 21-4, in fastbreak points after Bryon Russell knocked the ball loose from Lamond Murray and scored off the transition after receiving a nice pass from Stockton. Trailing 72-56, the Clippers responded with a 12-2 run. But the Jazz finished the quarter like the last with a 6-0 spurt.

FOURTH QUARTER

* IN REVIEW: The Jazz turned the game into a rout, outscoring the Clippers, 9-2, to open the quarter. Stockton was not only getting assists--he finished with 17--but also was getting rebounds. On one play, Stockton screened out Outlaw to get a rebound and made a pass to Anderson for an easy basket.
