School Bonds

* In the early ‘60, I voted for a school bond issue that included a new junior high school in Pacific Palisades, in Temescal Canyon. The measure passed but the school never was built. Instead, the money was diverted elsewhere.

Now, in 1997, Los Angeles voters have approved Proposition BB, earmarked for school repairs and upgrading. But wait! The L.A. school board now wants to divert $87 million of the $2.4-billion bond issue to build a new Belmont High School. A complete surprise to the majority of voters.

Once burned, twice shy. Third time? Don’t even try!
