Relocation of Alternative Education Site on Agenda
- Share via
The decision to close Newport-Mesa’s alternative education center has been made, and tonight the school district’s trustees will vote on where to relocate it.
The current proposal is to move the independent study program and continuation school from Monte Vista School to Davis School.
Both are in Costa Mesa.
Monte Vista will soon reopen as an elementary school to accommodate a boom in enrollment. Davis, a former middle school, has been closed for several years.
Newport-Mesa Unified board members said they expect opposition to the plan from parents whose children attend Costa Mesa High School.
Davis is adjacent to Costa Mesa High, and some parents have already contacted members of the board about their concerns over the proximity of the two schools.
“They are worried the students from the alternative ed programs will wander over onto their campus,” board President Martha Fluor said.
If the board approves the plan, alternative education students would report to Davis as early as this fall.
The board will meet at 7 p.m. at Harper Community Center, 825 W. 18th St., Costa Mesa.
