Pitchers made four throwing errors in Monday night’s game. The Philadelphia Phillies’ Michael Mimbs made the last--and most costly.

Mimbs’ throwing error in the 12th put the go-ahead run on base and helped trigger a six-run inning that gave the Pittsburgh Pirates a 9-4 victory over the Phillies.

Tony Womack led off the 12th with a bunt that Mimbs fielded, then threw wide of first for an error that put Womack on second. Womack came home on Kevin Elster’s RBI single, and the Pirates tacked on five more runs.

“I rushed my throw on the bunt,” said Mimbs (0-2). “I just didn’t get the job done.”

Earlier in the game, Philadelphia’s Mark Portugal and Erik Plantenberg, as well as Pittsburgh’s Esteban Loiaza, got errors on bad throws, but Pirates Manager Gene Lamont said Mimbs’ mistake was crucial.

“When a game goes long like that, when you make a mistake, it’s going to get you,” Lamont said. “We kind of outlasted them a little bit.”

After Elster’s hit, Jason Kendall’s sacrifice fly scored Jermaine Allensworth, and another run scored when the throw from center fielder Wendell Magee Jr. deflected into the Pirates’ dugout.

After a wild pitch, Randa’s double made it 8-3 before before Midre Cummings capped the outburst with an RBI triple.

“Tonight, we got some big hits and usually that’s the difference between winning and losing,” Lamont said.

Marc Wilkins (1-0) pitched the 11th inning for the victory.

Darren Daulton, whose four hits were the most by a Phillie in a game this year, got his first outfield assist since moving from catcher in the fifth when he threw out Al Martin, who tried to stretch a single off the right-field wall. Daulton, however, left the game in the 10th inning with a mild strain of his left hamstring after hitting a two-out triple.

Rex Hudler, whom the Phillies hoped would be ready to come off the disabled list, said his sore left hamstring is still another two or three days away from letting him play.
