Have you ever been to a British-made movie? Unless it is in black and white, you will notice there is often a credit that reads: “Colour by Technicolor.” What does that mean? It means that they understand there is a difference between a word and a name. Why can’t The Times?

If you talked about “British labor,” I could understand your insistence on using the American spelling. But the party that came to power in the U.K. is named “the Labour Party.” It is a proper name. It deserves to be spelled as the people themselves spell it.

To insist upon writing it as you do is an example of a provincialism unworthy in a newspaper that prides itself on being a world-class publication.
