SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

An intense search for a 67-year-old man believed lost in the Verdugo Hills was called off Monday when he turned up unharmed in Portland, Ore., apparently en route to see a daughter in Minnesota, police said.

Byung Suk Kim, a retired electrical engineer, called the Pasadena dry cleaning business of his son-in-law, Ki Jung Lee, about 4 p.m. Monday to say that he had taken a bus to Oregon after leaving his Glendale house about 6 a.m. Sunday, Lee said.

According to his son, John Kim, 40, the elder Kim had told his family he was going to hike through Brand Park and the mountainous terrain beyond it to a daughter’s house in La Canada Flintridge, a distance of 12 miles or more, police said.

The son said his father had never tried such a hike, so he called police when the elder Kim failed to show up about 12 hours later, at 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

After calling off their ground and air search because of fog seven hours later, Glendale police resumed their efforts at sunrise Monday and eventually used about 40 officers, sheriff’s deputies, city park rangers and search-and-rescue personnel. Police said eight dog units and eight horse teams were used as well.
