Charles Frederick Harold Lewis, 91, pioneer motion picture sound engineer. Lewis won an Academy Award for his sound work on the film “A Farewell to Arms,” starring Helen Hayes and Gary Cooper in 1932. A graduate of UC Berkeley in electrical engineering, Lewis in 1927 became the fourth sound engineer hired by Paramount Studios as “talkies” developed. He practiced his profession for more than half a century and was requested by top directors and actors, including Cary Grant, Rosalind Russell and Jack Benny. On Sunday in Los Angeles.
