Kerry Says He May Run for President

Sen. John F. Kerry (D-Mass.) responded to early election speculation by saying that he has not ruled out a run for the White House in 2000. “I think that the talk [that he may seek the Democratic nomination] is more serious than any analysis I’m making, but I certainly haven’t ruled anything out,” Kerry said on CBS-TV’s “Face the Nation.” Kerry in 1996 was reelected to his Senate seat in a furiously fought race against fellow millionaire Massachusetts Gov. William Weld, a Republican. Kerry is a Vietnam War veteran who was awarded a Silver Star medal. Conservative commentator Pat Buchanan, who ran for president as a Republican in 1992 and 1996, said on the program that he is not likely to seek the Republican nomination.
