Four teachers from the Pleasant Valley School District have been honored for bringing the study of agriculture into the classroom.

A first-place award in the grades K-3 category was presented to Sharon Harada and Jean Stahl, both of Tierra Linda Elementary School, by the California Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom. The two tied with a teacher from Garden Grove Unified School District.

The team of Robin Byrne and Patricia McLoughlin of Los Primeros Structured School received an honorable mention in the grades 4-6 category.

The 1997 teacher awards are based on an instructor’s ability to incorporate agriculture into curriculum, increase agricultural literacy among colleagues and students, and provide a way for others to learn effective teaching methods, according to Denise Benavides, foundation spokeswoman.

Eleven teachers received statewide awards from the nonprofit agricultural foundation, and another 10 received honorable mention for their work.
