2 Base Projects Added to Legislation
Federal lawmakers have included $13 million for two “quality of life” projects at the Port Hueneme military base in the 1998 military construction authorization bill, Congressman Elton Gallegly (R-Simi Valley) announced Thursday.
The Military Installations and Facilities Subcommittee proposed that part of the funding go toward revitalizing 130 enlisted and officer homes in Bruns Park that Gallegly said are in deplorable condition and need massive overhaul.
The authorization bill is expected to reach the House floor for a vote Wednesday.
“Our troops are the brightest and the best-trained, yet when they return home, it is often to places where the doors are falling off their hinges and the roofs leak,” Gallegly said.
The second project would improve a storm water drainage system at the Naval Construction Battalion Center. Built in the 1940s, the system is in violation of the Clean Water Act, with storm water runoff backing up and flooding truck routes, parking lots and buildings.
