Louis F. Rueter; Retired Blue Angels Crew Chief

Louis F. Rueter, a Camarillo resident whose love of the sea led to a 22-year career in the U.S. Navy and a job with the famous Blue Angels, died Friday. He was 71.

Rueter was born Nov. 2, 1925, in New York City. When he was 17, he joined the Navy, and served in World War II. A gifted aircraft mechanic and flight engineer, he became crew chief for the Blue Angels, the Navy’s elite aerial demonstration team.

He retired in 1964 and moved to Camarillo. He soon returned to Point Mugu, where he worked for 18 years as a quality assurance inspector.

Rueter was well-read and outspoken, family members said. He was a member of the American Legion, Fleet Reserve and Channel Island Condors.

“Lou’s passion in life was chasing down the ultimate bargain,” said his son, Skip Rueter, of Camarillo. “He was the early bird you feared at your garage sale.”

Rueter was a family man who adored his grandchildren, and put his wife, son and daughter first.

“He could be abrupt--you’d think he was the meanest thing on earth, but soon enough you’d find out he was a softy,” said Wanda Rueter, his wife of 41 years.

In addition to his son and wife, Rueter is survived by his daughter, Sandy Rueter of Camarillo, and five grandsons.

A memorial service will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. at Pierce Brothers Griffin Mortuary in Camarillo. Rueter will be buried at sea. Memorial donations can be made to the Boys & Girls Club of Camarillo, or to a favorite charity.
