Comcast Offers High-Speed Cable Modems for Internet

From Reuters

Comcast Corp. said Tuesday it has begun making high-speed Internet connections through cable modems available to subscribers in Orange County.

The Philadelphia-based company also launched the service Tuesday to some subscribers in its hometown, and will begin offering the service to parts of suburban Detroit on Thursday.

It is the second Orange County cable company to offer the service. Cox Cable began Internet connections last winter.

Comcast’s service allows computer users to connect to the Internet through a high-speed modem attached to the coaxial television cable. It connects users to World Wide Web content organized according to local and national interests.

The service currently operates at about 1 million to 2 million characters per second, compared with about 33,000 characters per second through common modems using dial-up telephone lines.

That enables much quicker downloading of images, video clips and other information than ordinary home dial-up systems, whose frequent slowness has earned the Web the derisive nickname “World Wide Wait.”
