Demolition Contract to Save City $200,000

A Chatsworth company will demolish the 500 block of Main Street in Ventura to make way for a 10-screen movie theater for $200,000 less than the city anticipated.

The City Council awarded the $464,169 contract Monday night to William L. Olsen Inc. The city had initially estimated the demolition would cost $670,000.

Olsen will begin razing the row of downtown buildings--stretching from the pink Jack Rose building at Main and Chestnut streets to the beige sprawl of the former Sav-More--in early July.

Work to prepare the site for construction of the planned $6.5-million Art Deco-style theater should be done by mid-September, according to a city report.

Savings from the demolition will be set aside in case unexpected costs arise during construction, Tom Figg, planning and redevelopment manager, told the council.

The demolition will occur between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Monday to Friday.

During construction there will be no parking allowed in the 500 block on the north side of Main Street adjacent to the site.
