Honoring a Hero Who Stopped a Runaway Car

Resident Donna Diaz will be honored as a hero today for stopping a runaway vehicle.

Diaz, 35, who works as a medical administrator, was driving in Long Beach earlier this month when she saw a light-blue Mazda rolling into the intersection at 7th Street and Ximeno Avenue. The driver appeared to be having a seizure, Diaz said.

As the vehicle rolled toward pedestrians and oncoming traffic, Diaz jumped out of her car and chased the Mazda until she was able to reach through the open window and steer it to safety.

Diaz was nominated for the award by GaleLynn Peterson of the Long Beach Fire Department, who learned of Diaz’s valor and fast action after talking to witnesses.

“Donna is to be credited with playing a significant role in potentially saving numerous lives,” Peterson said.

The award is given by Universal Care, a medical group based in Signal Hill. The company established the Hero Awards several years ago to recognize citizens who have helped save the lives of people experiencing health problems.
