Light-Rail Proposal May Be on Right Track

Share

The possibility of a light-rail system in Orange County moved a step closer to reality this week when a House subcommittee included in a major federal transportation bill about $4 million for the design of such a system from Fullerton to Irvine.

“It was a major hurdle,” said Erin Hill, a spokeswoman for Rep. Ron Packard (R-Oceanside), who pushed for the money in the House Subcommittee on Transportation Appropriations, of which he is a member.

The measure now goes to the full Transportation Committee, the full House and finally the Senate.

Earlier this month, the Orange County Transportation Authority approved a plan for a rail system along the busy 28-mile corridor between Fullerton and Irvine, contingent on financial support from the federal government.

The design is expected to cost $4 million to $6 million, 80% of which will come from federal government and the rest from Measure M funds.
