Soldiers Take Away Opposition Leader
Soldiers entered the home of Congolese opposition leader Etienne Tshisekedi, smashed down his bedroom door and hustled him away hours after he gave a political speech. A police commander said Tshisekedi had not been arrested but had been taken to see President Laurent Kabila. Tshisekedi’s speech had been conciliatory, but Kabila banned all political activity after ousting dictator Mobutu Sese Seko last month. Tshisekedi, who had been repeatedly jailed because of his opposition to Mobutu, has accused Kabila of establishing a new dictatorship.
