Barbecue, Parade Planned to Celebrate Community’s Centennial

Share

Tickets are on sale for the city’s centennial barbecue July 19 at Community Congregational Church.

The barbecue concludes a day of activities celebrating July 19, 1897, which residents consider to be the founding of the modern community. On that day, members of the local historical society said, the community’s first industry opened: a sugar beet factory.

The city was not incorporated, however, until 1960.

A parade starting at Reagan Street and Serpentine Drive and concluding at Laurel Park will begin at 2:30 p.m.

Meal tickets are $8 for adults and $4 for children. They are available at the church weekdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The parade and other activities are free.
