Life’s a Bowl of Pasta

Robert Loggia is one of the sexiest actors around. In fact, we talked to him about that very subject as well as fitness. Loggia, who’s featured in “National Lampoon’s The Don’s Analyst” on Showtime (Sept. 6) said, “I don’t have a 31-inch waist anymore, but at 67 why the hell do I need a 31-inch waist? I’m a 44 regular and I’m in great shape, you know, so. . . .”

Question: So how are you staying in shape?

Answer: I’m a recently addicted golfer now. It’s become a way of life. You can walk and get to know the person you’re playing with. It’s a game of character. You know, we travel a lot between movies and being invited to golf tournaments. It’s a pretty damn good life.

Q: And that makes me think about food.

A: Good, I love food. I do all the cooking in our house, by the way.

Q: How nice. How did that happen?

A: Because I was aggressive and elbowed my wife, Audrey, out of the kitchen.

Q: Did Audrey object?

A: Are you kidding? She loved it. And I clean up. I don’t leave a mess for her. I also serve her breakfast in bed, I might add. Every morning.

Q: You serve your wife breakfast in bed. You’re serious?

A: I am. Her breakfast is not that complicated. She likes a grapefruit, which I scoop out, a little sliced banana, a scone and tea. What is the name of that tea? I do it every morning and forget the name. . . .

Q: You even scoop out the little grapefruit sections?

A: Yeah. I can’t remember the name of that tea. I like strong black coffee. And I have olive bread and I might have a little cheddar cheese with that and well-done bacon, and I like granola with sliced banana and skim milk. And that’s it.

Q: Let me ask you something. When you serve breakfast, I suppose it’s on a tray?

A: Yeah. I bring it up on the tray. She’s in bed with the two dogs--Molly and Murphy--and I serve it to her. I’m surrounded by Irish lassies. I love it. I feel like the fox in the chicken coop.

Q: Oh, my. Let’s move on to lunch and dinner.

A: Lunch I don’t usually have. For dinner, we go out four or five times a week, but if we’re home, we might have chicken but the ultimate for me is pasta. I mean, that is the basis of it all. Arugula salad with shaved Parmesan and a plate of pasta, you’re home free, you know?

Q: Are you aware that women find you sexy?

A: Am I aware of that?

Q: Uh-huh.

A: Well, I don’t know about being sexy, but if that’s the case, I’ll tell you why then: I know I like women, I love women.

Q: It shows, you know.

A: When I think back on it, part of that had to do with my father being a throwback to Sicily and my mother being an emancipated woman here in America--they were both born in Sicily. I’m first-generation American. I was sensitive toward my mother, her right to direct the family--to have a voice in what was done.
