LAPD Captain to Discuss Cost of Crime

Share

Capt. Mike Downing, head of operations for the LAPD’s Van Nuys Division, will address the cost of crime during tonight’s meeting of the Sepulveda Boulevard Business Watch.

Flip Smith, who runs the business group and its three newer mid-Valley affiliates, said police records indicate that a murder case, from arrest through conviction and sentencing, costs taxpayers about $2.5 million.

“That’s a lot of money,” he said. “Hopefully this kind of information will get people thinking about what they can do to prevent a rise in crime.”

The business watch includes owners and managers of businesses along the boulevard and nearby streets. Members identify problems in the area and work on solutions with police.

Tonight’s meeting will take place at 6:30 at Wickes Furniture, 6161 Sepulveda Blvd. Those interested in more information may call Smith at (818) 786-8686.
