Officials Will Unveil Plaque for Officer

At the opening of Bob Henry Park on Sunday, officials will unveil a plaque written by the Police Department in honor of the officer killed in the line of duty.

The inscription reads:

“On Aug. 17, 1997, dedicated in memory of Newport Beach Police Officer Bob Henry, who died on April 13, 1995, after being fatally wounded near this site while valiantly protecting the citizens of this community.”

Below the message are the names of Mayor Janice A. Debay, the City Council members and key city administrators.

Henry, 30, was shot in a struggle with a suicidal man next to the recently completed park on Dover Drive and 16th Street. He is survived by a wife and three children.The $1-million park built in his memory opens at 12:30 p.m. Sunday.

Children will play soccer and baseball on the new fields. At 2:30 p.m., the Newport Beach Police Department team will challenge the Newport Fire and Marine team in softball.
