From Staff and Wire Reports

While no track and field world records fell during the nine-day World Championships that ended Sunday, that was not the case at the Weltklasse Grand Prix meet Wednesday in Zurich, Switzerland.

Wilson Kipketer, a 24-year-old Kenyan-born star who is now a citizen of Denmark, smashed Sebastian Coe’s 16-year-old record in the 800 meters with a time of 1 minute 41.24 seconds. Earlier this summer Kipketer tied Coe’s mark of 1:41.73, the oldest record in track and field.

Wilson Boit Kipketer of Kenya, no relation to the 800-meter runner, broke the 3,000-meter steeplechase record of 7:59.18 by countryman Moses Kiptanui with a time of 7:59.08. And Haile Gebrselassie, a 24-year-old Ethiopian, pulverized his own 5,000 record with a time of 12:41.86, improving on his 1995 mark of 12:44.39.

The Vancouver Grizzlies are out $340,000 in salary-cap dollars because top draft pick Antonio Daniels told a television station he had agreed to a contract that would pay him $1.7 million a year, even though he had yet to sign it. Chris Gratton of the Tampa Bay Lightning has signed a $16.5-million offer sheet with the Philadelphia Flyers, but the Chicago Blackhawks say they struck a deal with the Lightning for Gratton, an unrestricted free agent.

The NHL is investigating the dispute, which is reminiscent of the confusion six years ago regarding the rights to Eric Lindros.
