Orville Warren Stoval, a former assistant fire chief with the Ventura Fire Department, died Saturday at his home. He was 71.

Born July 20, 1926, in Chino, Stoval was 7 when he moved with his family to Ventura County.

During World War II and the Korean conflict, he served in the Army. He joined the Ventura Fire Department in 1952, and retired as assistant fire chief in 1978.

Stoval loved to play golf, travel and fish. He was a member of the Saticoy Regional Senior Golf Club, and the Safety Service Golf Club.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Juanita; son Max of Oak View; daughters Judy Reed of Simi Valley, and Rosemary Clocherty of Nine Mile Falls, Wash.; sisters Jeri Straughn of Oxnard and Dorothy Merchant of Port Hueneme; seven grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Friends may call today from 3 to 8 p.m. at Ted Mayr Funeral Home in Ventura. Services will be held at the funeral home at 10 a.m. Wednesday, with Rev. John Cherrie of Ventura Missionary Church officiating. Burial will follow in Ivy Lawn Memorial Park in Ventura.

Arrangements are under the care of Ted Mayr Funeral Home in Ventura.
