The Aquadettes of Leisure World are gearing up this week for their 32nd annual “Aqua Follies” synchronized swimming revue.

The show, which features women from 62 to 85, will open in Clubhouse One on Thursday for a four-day engagement.

The show is completely produced by the 27 members of the Aquadettes, including choreography, costumes, music, staging and lighting.

The 90-minute revue features 11 numbers performed to an eclectic mix of music from swing and modern pop to classical and show tunes.

“It’s a rather unusual feat for women our age,” said director Beverly Margolis, 67, who is participating in her eighth show. “I think that’s part of the attraction.”

Preparation started in November with skills training. Casting was in January, followed by months of practice three days a week.

To qualify for the team, the women must be Leisure World residents and able to swim the four basic strokes during a swim test.

The team has included a former U.S. Olympic swim team member and currently includes two Masters Swim Program competitive swimmers.

But Barbara Hack, the Aquadettes president, said most of the women had never been involved in synchronized swimming. She said the group’s purpose is not just to perform but to promote fitness and enjoyment of the sport.

“It’s challenging and good exercise and a wonderful social group,” said Hack, 65. “It’s just fun.”

The show, Margolis said “is icing on the cake.”

The public will have to wait a year to see the Aquadettes’ show, because all four of this week’s are sold out.

Next year’s event is set once again for the last week in August.
