How to Do It Big

Total: $1,935

French designer Jean Paul Gaultier’s interpretation of the sports themes seen throughout fall collections includes this ensemble, borrowed from the boxing ring. It’s a tough guy look--sort of Rocky goes glam--for boxing club or nightclub.

The full-legged leather pants have the high, elasticized waist of a prizefighter’s trunks. It might take Mike Tyson’s share of a title fight purse to afford them at $1,645. Available at Shauna Stein in the Beverly Center.

The black cotton and polyester hooded top from the less pricey Gaultier Jeans line is one piece, ingeniously designed with zip front. Available in October at Macy’s for $290.

The hip-hop inspired silver watch fob on a chain, black and white high-top wedged sneakers, belt, and black and red silk boxer’s robe were Gaultier accessories made only for the runway.

Total: $172.97

For the Gaultier look on a budget, we started with narrower black nylon taffeta pull-on pants by Helly Hansen. Available at Sport Chalet for $42.

The black cotton and spandex zip-front sports bra by Bestform (at Kmart citywide, $11.99) is teamed with a hooded black long-sleeved T-shirt from Ross Dress for Less for $10.99.

The wedged sneakers, by No Parking, are from Leeds, $29.99, and the mock crocodile leather belt with gold buckle was bought from a local street vendor for $8. The lingerie floor of a department store would be a likely place to find a shawl-collared silk boxer’s robe. Joe Boxer has similarly cut silk charmeuse robes. At Only Hearts, Santa Monica, for about $70.
