$2-Million Budget Cut Delayed
The Arcadia City Council has delayed cutting the annual budget by more than $2 million after hundreds of residents and employees packed the council chamber and lined a nearby courtyard, seeking to save everything from the neighborhood fire station to their jobs.
After poring over 58 possible cuts--including closing the library two days a week, shutting down a fire station and laying off employees--the council decided to delay taking action for a week.
The council will ask the Los Angeles County Fire District for an estimate of how much it would charge annually for fire service now provided by the Arcadia Fire Department.
The council needs to make the cuts because property owners in a mail-in election recently rejected a $2.2-million assessment for fire service.
