Party Activist Held as Violence Mounts

An activist in the ruling party was arrested in connection with weeklong violence on the Indian Ocean coast that has killed more than three dozen people. Omar Masumbuko, head of a youth club affiliated with President Daniel Arap Moi’s Kenya African National Union, was the second party official to be picked up since the attacks on police and civilians began Aug. 13. Meanwhile, police said villagers south of Mombasa lynched two men, raising the death toll to 39 as the violence entered a second week. Authorities said 309 people have been arrested so far.
