Hogarth and Gore Advance in Amateur

Tim Hogarth of Chatsworth and Jason Gore of Valencia advanced to the second round of match play Wednesday at the U.S. Amateur golf championship at Cog Hill Golf Club in Lemont, Ill.

Hogarth, last year’s U.S. Public Links and L.A. City champion, defeated Jason Piurkowski of Webster, N.Y., 2 and 1.

Gore, a member of Pepperdine’s NCAA championship team and the victorious U.S. Walker Cup team, defeated Alberto Ochoa of Edinburg, Texas, 3 and 2.

Hogarth and Newhall’s Jason Semelsberger were two of 10 players to advance from a 21-man qualifying playoff into the first round of match play earlier Wednesday.

Gore, Chad Wright of Ventura, Mitch Voges of Simi Valley and Mike Miller of Valencia qualified Tuesday.

Semelsberger, a sophomore-to-be at UCLA out of Hart High, lost to Joel Kribel of Pleasanton, Calif., and USC’s Wright fell to Jace Bugg of Henderson, Ky., both 5 and 3.

Aaron Oberholser of San Jose beat Voges, the 1991 champion, 2 up. Boomer Erick of Marco Island, Fla., downed Miller, 3 and 2.

U.S. Junior Amateur champion Jason Allred, 17, of Ashland, Ore., beat Walker Cup player Buddy Marucci Jr., 45, of Malvern, Pa., 4 and 3.

Qualifying medalist Roger Tambellini of Templeton, Calif., fell to Terry Oloughlin of White Bear Lake, Minn., 3 and 2.

Two rounds will be held today, the quarterfinals on Friday, the semifinals on Saturday and the 36-hole final on Sunday.
