Making Headway

A Cal State committee on campus development took an important first step Monday toward converting Camarillo State Hospital into Cal State Channel Islands (B1). . . . The committee’s favorable vote to take over the shuttered mental hospital will now be forwarded to the full Cal State Board of Trustees.

Steve Bennett, one of three Ventura City Council members not running for reelection, still wants a hand in shaping city politics (B1). Bennett plans to launch a ballot initiative in 1998 to abolish all organized groups from giving money to council candidates. . . . In June, City Atty. Bob Boehm warned that prohibiting such contributions could be unconstitutional.

The Day After

Cleaning up was the order of the day Monday, following the close of the 1997 Ventura County Fair (B1). Organizers say the 12-day event was a big success. Attendance was up 5.7%, to 270,257 visitors and 10% more of them braved the carnival rides. . . . “The weather was flawless, everyone was relaxed, it was great energy,” said fair spokeswoman Teri Raley.
