* Proportion: s nearly half (45%) of all 3 and 4 year olds

High School

* Number enrolled: about 15 million

College

* Number enrolled: 14.7 million

* Number of undergraduates: 12 million

* Undergraduates in four-year-colleges: 8.1 million

* Percentage attending a public institution: 75%

* Percentage holding down a job: 62%

Looking Ahead...

Changes anticipated between 1996 and 2006

* Increase in total enrollment in public and private schools: from 51.7 million to 54.6 million

* Increase in high school graduates: 17% (but almost 30% in Western states)

* Rise in college enrollment: 14%

* Needed to maintain current K-12 student services: 190,000 additional teachers; 6,000 more schools; $15 billion in additional annual operating funds.
