Plan to Transfer El Porto Into School District Gains

Plans to make the city’s El Porto neighborhood a permanent part of the Manhattan Beach Unified School District are moving closer to fruition.

The school board recently passed a resolution that asks the Los Angeles County Board of Education to transfer the property from the El Segundo Unified School District to the Manhattan Beach district. El Segundo’s school board approved a similar measure last month.

El Porto, located on the border of Manhattan Beach and El Segundo, was part of the El Segundo school district until Manhattan Beach annexed the formerly unincorporated county land 17 years ago. Over the years, many students have transferred to Manhattan Beach schools. The cities want to make the switch official, said El Segundo Acting Supt. Bill Watkins.

If the county approves the transfer, El Porto will become the responsibility of Manhattan Beach in the 1998-99 school year. Watkins said fewer than 10 students will be affected by the change.
