City Considering 2 Sites for Skateboard Park

Share

City officials have moved a step closer to finding a permanent site for a skateboard park in Hermosa Beach.

A subcommittee is evaluating a plan to provide a 10,000-square-foot swath of land at South Park or purchase a smaller piece of vacant land near the city’s community center, said City Manager Steve Burrell. However, the second site may be too small to accommodate a skateboard park, Burrell said.

The proposed plan calls for the city to provide the land and the skaters to provide equipment such as ramps. The City Council is scheduled to discuss both sites at its Sept. 23 meeting.

The city has been trying to find a place to build a skateboard park for more than a year. Hundreds of youths in the city have rallied for a park, claiming that municipal codes prevent them from skating in most public places.
