Franklin Telecom’s recently introduced Tempest Data Voice Gateway has been selected by Syracuse University to demonstrate toll-quality voice via a high-performance technology called asynchronous transfer mode.

The demonstration on the Rural Educational System Network was a joint effort by Lucent Technologies, IBM, Sheco Energy Co., Syracuse University and Westlake Village-based Franklin Telecom.

Salim Hariri, head of the university’s High Performance Distributed Computing Lab, said several telephone systems were tested in his laboratory. “The Franklin Tempest stood out as the quality leader for its voice quality,” he said.

The rural project’s mandate is to develop a reliable, state-of-the-art way to link people in remote areas with educational, medical and entertainment resources that have, until now, been unavailable to them.

The network will connect schools, hospitals and courthouses with the main campus of Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas.

The demonstration was held at the Alabama-Coushatta Indian Reservation, 75 miles northeast of Houston. Lucent Technologies provided the optical fiber, IBM supplied the ATM switch hardware and Sheco Energy did the physical cable installation. Syracuse University provided system and technical personnel, and Franklin Telecom provided the Tempest and support.

Franklin Telecom designs and manufactures communications devices and high-speed local- and wide-area network, telco and satellite systems and software.
