School Considering Advanced Classes

Share

Santa Susana High School will hold a meeting Thursday at 7 p.m. for students and parents to discuss a new college-preparatory program that officials at the magnet school are considering.

Principal Patricia Hauser said the school, which emphasizes the performing arts and technology, may offer advanced classes through the International Baccalaureate program.

About 700 secondary schools around the world take part in the New York-based program. In Ventura County, only Newbury Park High School offers International Baccalaureate classes.

Like Advanced Placement or honors classes, they can be taken to earn college credit.

Courses include experimental sciences, math and computing, social studies, English literature and a modern foreign language. The curriculum also lends itself to electives in art, design and music, which complement the magnet school’s vision, Hauser said.

School officials hope to gather community comments and take the idea to the Simi Valley Unified School District board in the spring. Officials are looking to finance the extra costs--including a $7,000 membership fee and other start-up expenses--through donations.

If the International Baccalaureate application is accepted, students in the Class of 2002 would be the first candidates for the program’s full diploma.

Thursday’s meeting will be at the school, 3570 E. Cochran St. For more information, call the school at 520-6800.
