More than 11,000 “deadbeat” parents in New Mexico have had their driver’s licenses revoked for failing to pay child support, officials said Tuesday.

Under a new state law that took effect Monday, any mother or father whose child-support payments are at least 30 days late and $1,000 behind will have their licenses taken away.

Department of Motor Vehicles officials said they would start to seize the assets of the offenders whose licenses were revoked if they failed to pay their child-support debts by the end of the year.
