City to Discuss Extent of Library Upgrade

The Main Library will close for renovation Dec. 24, but how much of a face-lift is needed will be debated today by the City Council.
The Department of Community and Library Services is seeking a complete overhaul at a cost of about $2.6 million, about $1 million more than the original targeted amount.
Some city officials have questioned spending that much on the project when the library may face demolition--perhaps within 10 years--for a larger library complex.
“What is unknown is how long it will take to raise the funds for a new library,” said Gary Wann, the department director pushing for the full-scale renovation.
In the meantime, officials say the library is inadequate in almost every respect, from bathrooms that do not accommodate the disabled to primitive technology.
The meeting begins at 4:30 p.m. at City Hall, 300 E. Chapman Ave.
