Westminster School District’s hearing in Sacramento to seek an exemption from bilingual education requirements was postponed Wednesday until January, a state spokesman said.

Bill Lucia, executive director for the State Board of Education, said that the district’s petition was held over one month because district officials had flight delays in Orange County.

The 9,200-student district hopes to extend a temporary bilingual education waiver it won in February 1996.

The waiver allows it to teach native Vietnamese- and Spanish-speaking students almost entirely in English.

The state board’s next meeting is scheduled for Jan. 7-9.
