State Lauds Progress at Court Schools

Once criticized for failing to adequately serve bilingual and special education students, Ventura County juvenile court schools have now earned praise from the state Department of Education for their progress.

Three years ago the county’s juvenile court schools were under investigation by the Ventura County Grand Jury because of allegations that the schools were not providing proper services to these two groups of students.

A state review, however, showed that those problems have been corrected.

And the California Department of Education Coordinated Compliance Review team commended the juvenile court schools staff for completing special training to help students with limited English.

Ventura County Supt. of Schools Charles Weis said the improvement over three years was “quite an accomplishment.”
