Agencies to Stay in Rent-Free Location

Following months of negotiations between federal and local agencies, the Social Security Administration has decided to keep its office in the Under One Roof center open, according to Rep. Brad Sherman (D-Sherman Oaks).

The Under One Roof pilot project began in 1981 with help from the nonprofit group Community Conscience to allow various social services agencies to operate in a single location with government paying the rent.

Now 19 such organizations, including nonprofit groups and a few governmental agencies, operate from the center at 80 E. Hillcrest Drive.

Social Security Administration officials had been considering expanding their office, and the General Services Administration was planning to move them to a new location.

That move would have shifted the rent burden to the nonprofit agencies, Sherman said.

“I toured Under One Roof and spoke many times with officials at GSA and the Social Security Administration to stress their importance to our community,” Sherman said.
