“Carlos the Jackal,” the Cold War terrorist who took up the Palestinian cause and became the world’s most-wanted man, was unrepentant Friday when he faced a courtroom for the first time in his life--and asked that his case be thrown out.

“My name is Ilich Ramirez Sanchez. My profession is professional revolutionary. The world is my domain. My last address was Khartoum, in Sudan,” he declared.

The insouciant defendant--debonair in a tan overcoat and slacks, his neck wrapped in an ascot--identified himself before Presiding Judge Yves Corneloup at the start of his murder trial.

Ramirez, 48, gained international notoriety as the Cold War-era mastermind of deadly bombings, assassinations and hostage dramas.

By his own count, he has killed 83 people.

After eluding capture for decades, Ramirez now is being tried for the 1975 Paris killings of two French investigators and a Lebanese former colleague whom Ramirez suspected of being an informer.
