French Workweek

If the French succeed in reducing the workweek without reducing pay and benefits [“France’s 35-Hour Solution,” Nov. 23], perhaps the U.S. could solve the problem of too few entry-level jobs for welfare recipients by reducing the workweek for only minimum-wage jobs without reducing pay to provide the number of jobs required to fulfill the government’s mandate of welfare-to-work requirements.
Some government subsidy could reduce the burden on business, and within a short time we would have little or no unemployment. Of course, Federal Reserve Board Chairman Alan Greenspan will then up the interest rate and throw people out of jobs.
