Mike Gartner scored his 700th goal and goalie Nikolai Khabibulin stopped 31 shots as the Phoenix Coyotes skated to a 3-3 tie with the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday night at Phoenix.

Gartner became the fifth player in NHL history to score 700 goals when he scored 10:41 into the first period. He scored his second goal by redirecting a slap shot past Chris Osgood to tie the score, 3-3, with 4:44 left in the third.

Both of Gartner’s goals, his fourth and fifth this season, were typical of his hard-working style. He scored the first on a 12-foot wrist shot directly in front of the net, and he got the other by tipping the puck just outside the crease.

Philadelphia 3, Tampa Bay 0--Ron Hextall made 20 saves for his 21st career shutout and John LeClair scored twice including his 200th goal to lead the Flyers at Philadelphia.

Hextall’s second shutout this season came against the NHL’s lowest-scoring team. The Lightning, whose 57 goals are eight fewer than second-worst Toronto, have been shut out twice.

LeClair, who had 101 goals the last two seasons, scored his 200th goal in his 458th game.

The Flyers have won three in a row. Tampa Bay, which ended a 16-game winless streak on the road Saturday in Ottawa, is 2-16-1 away from home.

San Jose 2, Chicago 1--Owen Nolan and Jeff Friesen scored first-period goals at Chicago to help the tight-checking Sharks extend their unbeaten streak to four games.

The Sharks, 3-0-1, in its last four games, held the struggling Blackhawks to only 18 shots. Eric Daze was the only Blackhawk to beat Shark goalie Mike Vernon, scoring a power-play goal on a fluke carom with four seconds left in the second period.

The Blackhawks are winless in their last five games overall (0-3-2) and last eight at home (0-4-4).
