Report Pegs Storm Damage at $4 Million

An intense rainstorm that buffeted Southern California on Dec. 6 caused at least $4 million in damage locally, according to a report to be released tonight to the City Council.

Although the city prepared for the storm by clearing debris from its drainage system, problems were reported across Lake Forest.

“Given the amount of water that came through the city, we think the damage very clearly could have been considerably more,” City Manager Bob Dunek said.

Problem areas included El Toro II Park, which was flooded and will need substantial turf replacement.

Large sections of embankment along Serrano Creek fell off in a torrent of runoff. Pavement buckled along Lake Forest Boulevard west of Pittsford Drive.

The city also incurred a hefty price tag for renting heavy equipment, including a crane that pulled a house-sized pile of debris from flood channels.

The 7 p.m. meeting will take place at City Hall, 23161 Lake Center Drive.
