Rost Twins

Re “Ohio Couple Granted Custody of Indian Twins,” Dec. 9:

All things considered, Bridget and Lucy Rost are very lucky girls. The compassionate custody battle resolution by their parents and birth parents clearly demonstrates that they are truly loved.

Although Bridget and Lucy are referred to as “a playful pair of American Indian twins” they are in fact only 3/32 Pomo Indian. Moreover, the custody dispute was not originally initiated by birth parents Rick and Cindy Adams. After all, it was they who specifically selected Jim and Colette Rost to adopt the little girls at birth.

No one can doubt the loss and sadness that birth parents experience. However, until adoption and custody laws acknowledge children’s rights as people, not possessions, the risk of heartbreak and permanent emotional damage to precious little ones will persist.
