Spotlight: Hambrecht & Quist Founder to Retire

William Hambrecht, co-founder of the San Francisco investment bank Hambrecht & Quist, said he will retire Jan. 1 as chairman. Hambrecht, 62, who founded the firm with the late George Quist in 1968, will be succeeded by President and Chief Executive Daniel Case. H&Q; specializes in technology and health-care stocks and earned its reputation taking companies such as Apple Computer Inc. public. H&Q; has been the subject of persistent takeover rumors in recent weeks.
