Miami Mayor

I was shocked to read your article (Dec. 11) about Miami Mayor Xavier Suarez being ridiculed and attacked for his official conduct, which included showing up late one night, angry, at the home of a citizen who had written him a critical letter.

I have written critical, even scathing, letters to Mayor Richard Riordan, Gov. Pete Wilson and many senators, congressmen and presidents. Not once has any of them cared enough about his job, as the Miami mayor obviously does, to show up at my doorstep to confront me and debate whatever the issue was. Given my contempt for politicians, I would’ve never invited any of them into my home. But I want to promise Riordan, Wilson and Clinton that if they ever ring the doorbell, I will let them stand on the porch and will listen to whatever they have to say, at least until terminal boredom sets in.
