Council Votes 3-2 to Limit Officeholders to 2 Terms

Residents who want to serve on the City Council could be limited to two terms, or a total of eight years.

That’s what a divided council decided this week; voters will have a final say in next November’s election.

Under the proposal, anyone who is appointed to an unexpired term of less than two years would be eligible to run for office and serve two, four-year terms.

The council voted 3 to 2 to limit terms, with Councilwoman Patricia L. Bortle and Councilman Bob Bell voting against the measure.

Bell said he favored allowing elected officials to serve up to a total of 12 years. Bortle said she is against any limits: “We’re a small town, and we’re all volunteers--and we could run out of volunteers to run to be on the City Council.”

Mayor Rich Freschi said there are many qualified people in the city who should be given the chance to serve.
