City Approves $350,000 Park-and-Pay System

The City Council this week approved spending $350,000 to purchase a computerized parking system for the soon-to-be-completed Pier Plaza.

The plaza’s parking lot, which will serve the beach and adjacent restaurants, was designed to operate as an automated park-and-pay system. Some 530 parking spaces will operate under the automated system, while 74 spaces will be used for valet parking for nearby restaurants.

Users would pay by the hour at six ticket dispensers with cash, ATM or credit card.

Plans are to establish a $1.50 hourly fee and an annual $100 parking pass. The city estimates that the system would generate $430,000 in one year based on a 50% occupancy with an average three-hour stay.

The system is to be installed in April when the Pier Plaza, off Pacific Coast Highway and Main Street, is completed.
